Earth conceals thousands of miracles within. Many are out of human reach. Lakes are known to be one of the most beautiful natural wonders but wait⦠are they always beautiful? There are some lakes which are considered deadly, even though with its stunning natural beauty. The poisonous air or the surroundings of the lake will drag you to death.
Letâs have a look on some killer lakes which are deadly for several reasons and will leave you speechless.
1. Lake Nyos, Cameroon
Lake Nyos is one of the three exploding earth lakes. Lake Nyos exploded on 21 August, 1986. The explosion killed around 1,700 people and 3, 500 animals in Cameroon. What exactly happens in such cases is that the CO2 is trapped in the water, like the cork in a champagne bottle. The cork gets released and an explosion of CO2 gas occurs. That has critical results if the build up is too large. In Cameroon, thousands of villagers and animals lost their lives.
2. Horseshoe Lake, California, USA
Horseshoe Lake is the silent killer. The lake is a beauty with silent killing instincts. CO2 is present at 95 times its normal quantities here in the soil. If you want to see it, then just dig a hole in the sand near the lake and hold the flame inside the hole. You will notice that the flame snuffs out like there is no oxygen in there. This can affect humans badly. You will be surprised to know that in 2006 three people were killed by the carbon dioxide in the cave where they have taken shelter. The cave was not far from the lake.
3. Yellowstone Lake, USA
It has been recently found that craters lakes can kill also. Yellowstone Lake in the Yellowstone National Park is a part of a very active volcanic region. Scientists discovered a 100 foot dome on the floor of Maryâs bay. A small earthquake would be sufficient to trigger an explosion and this makes the Yellowstone Lake deadly.
4. Lake Mono, California USA
Mono lake was a striking healthy lake in 1940 till Los Angeles diverted the tributary for its water needs. The level dropped and the lake turned into the most poisonous one on earth since it contained chlorides, carbonates and sulfates. The health board calculated that it will take at least 20 years to re-establish the safety and health of the lake.
5. Boiling Lake, Dominica
Boiling lake is filled with extremely boiling water always. The water is continuously steaming so the lake is surrounded always by the vapor. The water is 180 to 197 degrees Fahrenheit at the edges of lake which will kill you in minutes. It is actually flooded fumarole, a crack through which gases from molten lava below escape. So be careful visitors! A slip here actually can be fatal.
6. Mount Rainier Crater Lake, Washington, USA
The peak of the mountain is covered with ice and snow. This is only 70 miles from Seattle and the volcanic gas in there is a threat to 100,000 people living nearby. Here the water is poisonous because of the sulfur dioxide which becomes sulfuric acid when combined with water.
It’s quite possible that the people of Seattle will be buried in rock and mud if a natural event, deadlier than explosions themselves, occurs here. The collapse of rocks would also break the lake letting free tons of water within. This can be one of the most deadly natural events ever.
7. Lake Karachy
This lake is known as the most polluted spot on the planet. Amazing beauty and the supposed view of clean water can make you wonder, but the stunning beauty hides the fact that it is the spot for dumping nuclear facility in Russia. It has sufficient radiations to kill humans in just an hour. In 1968, dust irradiated half a million people. Russia had to relocate other 7,000 residents who lived in that area.
The word ‘Lake’ itself lets our eyes create a beautiful picture. You can camp beside, fish and have fun with boating and playing funny water games in the lake water. But some lakes are as dangerous and deadly as anything else on the planet. Others has time-bombs inside and they are just waiting to kill all. So be aware!
