We may soon get peanuts in the market shelves that could just not be safer, but also more nutritious and even easier to grow, compared to the conventional ones! Yes, scientists have been given a green signal for building genetically engineered peanuts hoping to be implanted with all these qualities.
The flavor of this new peanut-variety will be enhanced, with more vitamins and nutrients to be included in it! These nuts would possibly trigger less allergic reactions, which is a life-threatening problem for some people, but, a major concern for food industry.
Eventually, these new peanuts could also yield more oil leading to produce biofuel! — As scientists hope the new variety will be requiring less rainfall to grow and will do it more efficiently, as it would be built-in herbicide and pest resistance!
The scientists seem to be confident with their upcoming new variety as these traits have already been engineered into major crops — like cotton, corn, soybeans and canola.
Though, the American Peanut Council has urged scientists to move ahead with “due diligence” on these GM peanuts, they would surely have to face consumer reluctance initially.
