Why go green with your cleaning products?

Going green with eco-friendly cleaning products is a good solution for your home to be clean without having any negative effects on the environment either. Read on to find out more reasons why you should start using green, eco-friendly cleaning products:

 1. Eco-friendly cleaning products reduce health problems

respiratory problems

Using green cleaning products are a better choice for many reasons, especially health reasons. . It’s quite challenging to keep a house full of kids and pets clean, especially during spring and summer when there is a lot of pollen and dust in the air. These can cause respiratory problems like asthma or allergies.

Studies have found that respiratory problems are aggravated by using chemical based cleaning products. The VOCs emitted in the form of gases from particular liquids and solids reduce the air quality of your home. These VOCs have been known to cause throat, nose and eye irritation, losing coordination, headaches, nausea, kidney, liver and nervous system damage. Some of these organic compounds may even cause cancer, in humans and animals. So using eco-friendly products are better for you, your home and the environment.

2. Chemical cleaners harm the environment

You’d be astonished at the number of toxic chemicals which are used to manufacture cleaning products, including floor cleaner, window cleaners and air fresheners. The promises to fight bacteria and remove bad odors are kept at the cost of using dangerous chemicals. Most cleaning products contain ammonia and bleach, which are poisonous and irritate lungs, eyes, throat and nose.

Residues of cleaning products which you wash down the drain end up in waterways, impacting the environment, especially wildlife. Surfactants, which are synthetic or petroleum based chemicals are highly toxic to aquatic and fish life. Surfactants are added to make your products soapier and have more suds, which is actually not required, as they don’t make for better cleaning.

3. Using green products can save money

Using green products can save money

You must be spending a lot of money to buy cleaning products for your home. By making your own, clean green cleaning products at home, you can save a quite a bit of money. Traditionally our ancestors used homemade cleaners by using ingredients like white vinegar, lemon and so on, which are non-toxic. You could make multipurpose cleaners can help to reduce costs and simplify the cleaning process. All purpose household cleaners can clean floors, tiles, counters, walls and woodwork. Bathroom cleaners can clean toilets, sinks, tubs and tiles.

4. Do not use products with unpronounceable ingredients

If you don’t want to make cleaning products at home, you can buy organic, natural cleaners. Do not buy products which have products which have names you can’t pronounce – these are bound to be toxic, even if the product label claims it is organic and natural. Try to find products which are packaged in biodegradable packs, or packaging which you can refill and pump sprays instead of aerosol sprays.

Here are a few cleaners you can make at home

1. Air freshener

Place white vinegar bowls in your kitchen or top of your fridge which will absorb unpleasant kitchen odors, like fried fish or other strong smelling foods. You could simmer cloves and / or cinnamon sticks to remove household odors.

You could also mix 2 tbsp of white vinegar with 2 pints of water and 4 drops of any essential oil like tea tree oil, lavender, lemon, rosemary or lemongrass, to make a scented kitchen surface freshener.

Furthermore, you can create another type of air freshener using lemon peelings. All you need to do is put the lemon peels in a pan of water, sprinkle around 1 tablespoon of baking soda with a few drops of vanilla and boil. The baking soda will cut the air odor and the lemon and vanilla will simply make your home smell fresh and fragrant.

2. General cleaning solution

3. Window Cleaner

Window Cleaning

The age old and completely natural windows cleaner is vinegar. So, all you need to do is add 1 cup vinegar with 2 cups of water. Simply put it in a spray bottle and you are ready to go. Vinegar contains acetic acid that cuts grime and smudges and also evaporates quite easily. Now, window cleaning is no more a problem. Do use a newspaper to wipe the windows dry. It will not leave behind any marks.

4. Hand Sanitizers

Natural Hand Sanitizers

So, there is one in the bathroom, one in the kitchen, one in the car, one in your bag and if there are kids in the house, they are probably at a lot more places. It is absolutely true that you need a good scrub with soap and water, but then hand sanitizers are also essential. You can make your own alcohol free hand sanitizer. For this, you need 1 cup of pure aloe vera gel, 1-2 tsp of witch hazel and 8 drops of essential oils of your choice. Now, simply combine all these ingredients together adjusting till you get the desired consistency and stir well. You can try organe, lemon and basil oils. They make great hand sanitizers.

But now you can easily forget your coffee spills, jelly finger prints and chocolate cookie smudges with just a natural home cleaner. Simply mix 1 tablespoon of lemon juice with 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Put the mixture on a cloth and then apply on furniture. The acid in the lemon will clean away the smears and smudges while the olive oil will help bring out the shine in the wood.
