Environmental Agency fined for polluting river

pollution came from concrete waste

Perhaps this is better and effective way to tackle pollution — fine for polluting — then finding alternative means. The Environment Agency – the watchdog of UK’s rivers — has been fined for polluting the River Exe in Somerset. It is fined with £7,500.

The river protector, a 10-year-old agency has been prosecuted for the first time, and that too for polluting water. It was in September 2005, that a subcontractor was building a flow monitoring station on the river. It leaked toxic building waste inadvertently into the main tributary. It was’level one’ pollution, killing atleast 300 fish!

Since the Environment Agency cannot prosecute itself, the government permitted a local landowner to bring about the prosecution in private.
