ESA project extended to aid biodiversity study

The study of wildlife migration process from the twin Galapagos Islands and Cocos Island received a shot in the arm after the islands were integrated in the Medspiration project, an ESA-funded venture to represent the most reliable temperature of the seas on a global basis.

ESA’s new Diversity project is expected to provide useful inputs and aid the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (UNCBD) to reduce significantly the current rate of biodiversity loss by 2010.

Through this programme, ESA monitors activities of the different actors involved in UNCBD in Central America. The effort would also provide Mesoamerican biological corridor change detection maps, coral reef maps, ocean water quality monitoring services, mangrove maps as well as a map of dry lands.

Medspiration provides very high-resolution maps and apart from helping conservation studies, it has been delivering SST data of European seas since 2004 and combining its all its findings for a Global Ocean Data Assimilation Experiment (GODAE) High-Resolution Sea Surface Temperature Pilot Project (GHRSST-PP).
