Kiwi Bach: Victoria University students prep solar home for Solar Decathlon

kiwi solar powered home for solar decathlon

A solar powered home, built by Victoria University architect graduates, Ben Jagersma, Anna Farrow, Nick Officer and Eli Nuttall, will go up against 20 such homes at the Solar Decathlon organized by the US Energy Department in Washington DC. Nonetheless, the Kiwis can see this house through its three- or four-months’ construction processon the waterfront in Wellington.

Corresponding to prerequisites for the solar homes, the Kiwi Bach – a 60-square-metre, one-bedroom home – will run air conditioning ad infinitum, hold movie nights, wash and dry two loads of towels and run hot showers on solar energy. Just to make sure that energy-efficient home with 39 roof-mounted solar panels is built under US$250,000 (NZ$350,000), the team will utilize locally procured timber and solar panels will be made from organic materials.
