The United Nations has honored a global charity called Live to Love Foundation that that builds eco friendly schools in remote areas to empower women and raise awareness about saving environment. Replicating its good work the charity has built an environmentally friendly building for Druk White Lotus School destroyed by the landslide which hit Ladakh recently. The solar powered school has been constructed using local resources and represents a combination of traditional architecture with contemporary engineering.
The innovative architecture of the Ladakh School has won several international design awards, including the 2002 World Architecture Awards for Best Education Building, Best Building in Asia, and joint winner for Best Green Building. Aamir Khan has officially been named the ambassador of the foundation that hopes to build similar schools in the hills of Sikkim and Darjeeling and the Spiti Valley.
