House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has taken a mammoth decision by moving to create a special committee to recommend legislation for cutting greenhouse gases. This move is surely going to jumpstart the traditional thinking concerning economic gains vis-a-vis global warming. Pelosi is quoted to have said:
I promise to do everything in my power to achieve energy independence … and to stop global warming
The move is likely to stir up a hornet’s nest starting a yearlong debate on global warming. To some degree, it would mean side stepping two of the House’s most powerful Democratic committee bosses.
Philip Clapp, president of National Environmental Trust is quoted to have said:
This is a really gutsy move by the speaker, Action on global warming is so urgent that the speaker has probably taken the only course that could produce a comprehensive bill before the 2008 elections swamp the political process.
This could end up in raising mileage standards for cars, trucks a definite negative for oil companies and U.S. automakers but might just uplift the image of the US a little after the bumbled Iraq policy.
