Non-volcanic mystic vibrations detected inside earth for the first time

violent tectonic plate movements

We all know that magma that flows beneath volcanoes produces tremors deep inside the Earth. But, a new study suggests something else too! It says that tremors can also be produced when the tectonic plates shift and slide. With this, non-volcanic tremors are recorded for the first time deep inside the Earth. Previously, they were recorded in deep boreholes, drilled down to a depth of about 2 miles only.

Vibrations from underground tremors have been recorded by scientists at a geologic observatory, situated along the San Andreas Fault. Running through California, the San Andreas Fault is an 800 mile scar in the earth. This fault bounds the boundaries between the Pacific Tectonic Plate and the North American Plate.

Kaye Shedlock, the program director for Earthscope at the National Science Foundation explained,

Unlike the sharp jolt of an earthquake, tremors within Earth’s crust emerge slowly, rumbling for longer periods of time.
