Panyaden School, a project located in Chiang Mai, Thailand, has been designed by 24H and provides for a sustainable and ‘green’ school with a Buddhist approach. The school is big enough to accommodate 375 student introducing them with the concept of green living.
Apart from learning the various faculties, the children will also indulge in creativity and shall master various arts pertaining to the environment like cloth weaving and local methods of agriculture – making the whole educational process a holistic one. There will be a balance between the education and environmental awareness on the basis of Buddhist principles. The entire schools structure is surrounded by lush and green orchards and the very design of the buildings replicate the landscape – making it an ode to Mother Nature.
The building is segregated into two distinct structures – the sala pavilion type and the classroom pavilion type. The structure of the school is entirely made out of natural raw materials- the walls have been made from earth, outer walls from adobe, windows have been cleverly made with recycled local wood used for window frame and glass bottles and washing machine windows used for the glass. The roof is made out of cascading bamboo – which is representative of the mountains. The sala pavilion is entirely made out of bundles of bamboo columns – making it look like a dense bamboo forest. the other salas also have an environment-based concept which are all inspired by the nature in Thailand and the local way of living.
The two main raw materials that have been used in the building of the school structure are local bamboo and earth, which have both been treated for durability. Apart from the structure, the surroundings of the Panyaden School also has been made eco-friendly with rice and organic produce being grown on the property. The school is a perfect example of minimal carbon footprint with the environmental-friendly measures that are taken to recycle waste food and treat waste water, which in turn can be used as bio-gas for cooking and as organic fertilizers for the crops. The Panyaden School is an inspiration for the world to start early and inculcate the habits and benefits of green living at an early stage.
