While munching your favorite potato chips do you ever wonder what happens to the water in those potatoes that give that crispy treat? Well, each potato contains nearly 80% water and all of it goes for waste. But, PepsiCo is working towards utilizing that water and taking its four UK chip factories entirely off the water grid. These factories use nearly 350,000 tons of potatoes each year, so the company now plans to recycle that water.
PepsiCo in its UK chip factories will recycling the water found in the potatoes into resources for manufacturing the raw materials into consumable products. This recycling of water will not only reduce water consumption, but will also reduce the money required to obtain water. The company is also testing the i-Crop irrigation device, which measures soil moisture and minimizes irrigation. There are plans to switch over to potato varieties that require less water.
