The world is moving in two directions at once. First, no matter in what respect we look at our lives, we are more advanced than we ever were. With technology and knowledge, we are achieving the milestones which our ancestors couldn’t even dream of. However, on the other hand, in some way we are also paying a price for it. By exploiting our natural resources very greedily we are quickly leading our planet to its doom. To save it, we need to make some quick and effective decisions. Garbage has been a problem for eons. In the past, we just threw it out the window… literally covering the streets with our filth, trash, and dirt. This system worked when there was a lot of land and few people, but when populations and cities grew, the garbage problem grew as well. In the more recent past (from the 1920s to the 1970s), instead of throwing trash out of the window, people have taken it to the garbage dump, which is basically a big hole in the ground where trash is buried… also not a great long-term solution for the environment. In 1976, the U.S. Congress passed the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act and fundamentally changed how we store and process our garbage.
