Lead Certification

Certification is needed for any work that might disturb coated surfaces or lead paint in an older property. The Environmental Protection Agency has designed numerous courses to suit the type of work you’re undertaking. The EPA, alongside state and local regulatory agencies, oversee and enforce lead certification requirements. Below are some of the courses available to you that you can apply for in order to get your certification.

What is Lead Paint Certification?

removing lead-based paintIf the work you’re completing might disturb lead paint, then you need to be lead certified. Not complying with the law could land you a hefty fine of up to $37,500 a day! There are numerous courses available to you depending on the type of work you’re undertaking. These include:

  • Lead abatement worker
  • Lead renovator
  • Lead abatement supervisor
  • Lead inspector
  • Lead dust sampling technician
  • Lead risk assessor

All of these courses are designed to give you the training you need in order to complete the job in a safe and effective way. The course you undertake should include training that is similar to the job you are doing.

Once you have studied in the classroom you will be expected to show that you understand the requirements and will have to perform some hands on tasks to show that you’re capable of performing the job safely. At the end of the course, you will usually have to take a short test which you must pass in order to become qualified.

Who Needs to Have Lead Certification?

Lead paint can be dangerous if not handled correctly. Anyone who plans on working in an environment that might disturb lead paint should have lead certification. Whether you are removing lead-based paint, inspecting lead-based paint, or simply re-modelling a property older than 1978, you will need to make sure you have the correct certification.

If you fail, you will be allowed to re-take the same test the same day. You will only get certified if you attend all of the classes, pass the EPA exam and show that you are competent at the hands on skills.
