IEEE, the world’s largest technical professional association, announced the result of the Southeastcon 2010 that was held in Charlotte, North Carolina. Electrical engineering students of Western Kentucky University have won the competition for their ingenious design. The team designed and built a solar-powered robot that they call the “Whiskers.” As many as 44 colleges and universities from the southeastern United States and Jamaica participated in the competition.
This year the competition was centered around renewable energy and the use of green energy in autonomous vehicles. Participants were asked to build a robot that initially had no energy and then use solar energy to traverse a set course of obstacles and terrain in three minutes. Standing against Mississippi State and Florida in the last round, the WKU’s robot posted the best run, winning the competition.
