Finding the right heating and cooling system for your home

When it comes to heating and cooling London Ontario residents have lots of options. Choosing the right system for you will ensure that your home is comfortable and climate controlled no matter the weather outside your door. The trouble is this: How do you know which company to choose? From water heater repair to air conditioning installation, there are a few things to bear in mind when choosing heating and cooling options for your home.

In recent years, there have been many advances in the heating and cooling industry. But just because something is new and technologically advanced doesn’t mean it’s the best option for your home. It’s important to know your options. By far, the most common method for heating and cooling your home is by way of a central air system. In these systems, vents are installed in each area of the house with the goal of distributing hot or cool air as required, throughout the house. In most cases, these systems are exactly what is required to keep an entire house at a comfortable temperature. The problem with central air systems, however, is that they require extensive installation. An extensive system of air ducts needs to be installed through the floors and walls, leading into every room in the house. If your home is older and does not already have an existing ductwork system in place, installing one can be very costly, not to mention disruptive.

Radiant heating is another option. In these systems, the floor is covered with special flooring that transfer heat throughout the house from the floor up. Electrically heated wiring or pipes of hot water are installed beneath the flooring. Because the entire floor is covered in this special flooring, there are no “cold spots” in the house – everything is heated evenly. Compare this to central air systems where the farther away from a vent you go, the cooler the temperature is. One big disadvantage of this type of heating is that it is not suited for air conditioning, only heating. If you want a cooling system in your home, you’ll need an additional option. If you live in a warm climate, this can be a problem. However, if you live in an area that doesn’t experience extreme heat, or if budget is not a concern, you might consider radiant heating plus central air for the best of both worlds.

Optionally, if you only need cooling solutions on a case-by-case basis, you might consider a small air conditioning unit that can be turned on when and where you need it. This is a good option for apartments and smaller homes, as they will only cool a small area at a time.

Whichever heating and cooling option you choose for your home, it’s important to go to a reputable installer to do the job. Otherwise, you could end up having to pay to have someone fix the mistakes of someone who didn’t know what they were doing.
