Why does cold weather drain automobile batteries?

I was just wondering the other day about automobile batteries getting drained in cold weather. But I remember being told that to keep other batteries like AA, D, etc in the freezer to keep them ‘fresh.’ But in winters my automobile batteries always go down. Why does winters put such a draw and drain automobile batteries? Do you know anything about it? Please share with me at the earliest. I would really appreciate it. Thanks.
