Five incredible things no one knew could be recycled

The first thing that comes to your mind when you hear about recyclable is plastic or wood.  However, many other, rather unimaginable, things out there can be recycled and reused. Here are five such things that you never knew could be recycled.

Hair

That is right. We are talking about human hair here. The strands that fall off your scalp while washing or combing can be recycled to add more nitrogen to the compost piles in your garden. That is because hair follicles are known to contain high amounts of nitrogen that can benefit your plants. It is not your hair alone that works here, you can also recycle the hair/fur that falls off your pet while brushing for the same purpose.

Another amazing use of recycled hair comes in the form of an agent that is used to clean up oil spills. A San Francisco based nonprofit organization called Matter of Trust actually collects pet as well as human hair to develop booms that would be useful in soaking up the oil from oil spills in seas and oceans.

Wine

Of course, you know the bottle the wine came in as well as the cork that came with it can be recycled. However, did you know that wine itself could be recycled? So stop and think about it before pouring that little bit of extra wine down the drain. You can send over the bottle to a glass recycling company and the cork to a cork recycling company. The wine in the bottle would make an excellent addition to the compost pile in your garden.

Keys

You don’t need to throw all those useless keys in the dustbin. Send them over to Keys for Kindness, a family run program that raises money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society by recycling these keys. The keys are recycled to form several steel objects that are then sold to raise money for the program.

Surfboards

It’s time to do something about that old, worn out surfboard that has been lying around in your garage for ages. ReSurf Recycling is a company that recycles surfboards as well as the waste materials that come with their manufacture. The surfboards recycled by the company are turned into concrete and asphalt used for paving roads.

Trophies

Some of us tend to keep our trophies indefinitely while others would want to get rid of them with time. If you are thinking of the latter, then consider sending your trophies over to Total Awards & Promotions Inc. The company would recycle your old trophies, re engrave them and donate them to NGOs.
