Five Things you didn’t know can be recycled

Most of us tend to throw certain household items in the trash thinking that they cannot be recycled. However, new programs have made it possible to recycle a variety of items that people thought could not be recycled in any way. Accordingly, here are 5 things you probably thought cannot be recycled.

Athletic Shoes

Have a worn down, torn or smelly pair of running shoes that you intend to throw in the dustbin? Don’t! Drop them in one of Nike’s Reuse a Shoe Recycling Bins instead. Nike will transform your torn, smelly shoes into a raw material called Nike Grind which will again be incorporated into zippers, shoe soles and running tracks manufactured by the company.

Crayons

Kids and a houseful of crayons go together. So if you have a box full of used crayons, send them over to the National Crayon Recycle Program that will take these crayons, recycle them and transform them in to new ones that can then be sold again, or handed over to less privileged children. The program has so far saved landfills from over 88000 pounds of crayons.

Bike Parts and Gear

It’s not just entire bikes but even individual broken parts that the company ‘Bikes Not Bombs’ wants. The company welcomes anything from tiny bicycle pieces like cracked frames, damaged tubes, worn tires, lights, locks, helmets, pumps, bags and even cycling clothes to entire bicycles. These bicycles are then fixed, repaired, and send to countries in Africa, Caribbean and Latin America. They are also sent to local workshops that specialize in teaching bicycle safety skills to teens.

Eyeglasses

Those with vision problems would most definitely have a bunch of used eyeglasses lying around in their home. If you are one of them, then hand over your used eyeglasses to the Lions Recycle for Strength Program which would clean them, sort them according to their prescription and then hand them over to less privileged people who cannot afford eyeglasses. The program accepts anything from reading glasses, prescription glasses, sunglasses and children’s glasses to even metal and plastic frames.

Pantyhose

Who knew that pantyhose could be recycled? No Nonsense Legwear Company welcomes all kinds of pantyhose, including tights, nylons and even knee-highs. The company them recycles them to form source materials that can be used in carpets, park benches and anchor ropes. So avoid throwing your used or torn pantyhose in the trash, and send them over to No Nonsense Legwear Company instead.
