Vertical forests could be the next big thing for our urban landscapes

Urban jungle will soon cease to mean concrete. The Bosco Verticale is making its way into the city at the highest velocity possibly. No longer do urban towers look dull and boring, completely devoid of green. The balconies of these buildings are utilised for plants and trees. The towers have around 800 full grown trees and around 14,000 saplings in the balconies of the residences.

The conception of this must be credited to Stefano Boeri. The concept has popularised in no time and should definitely be a global scenario any time soon. Of course, one could modify the concept for smaller buildings and make the whole city look greener than ever. However, this will take a lot of time. The concept of Bosco Verticale is supposed to replace the urban sprawl.

If research is to be believed, then urban sprawl isn’t really a very healthy practice. When the world is smashing all kinds of stereotypes, why then should the architects stay behind? This is a revolutionary and iconic move and should change the face of cities entirely in the years to come.  The first and foremost challenge that it wins is biodiversity.

A large number of trees and plants of different kinds can be planted across balconies. What’s more, these different species of plants also host different kinds of birds. The world is changing and for the better. This wonderful idea definitely helps you put behind thoughts of destruction to quite an extent.

What does it mean for the long run?

Stefano Boeri Architetti is spreading their projects far and wide. Their designs are as green as they possibly can be. They are building something called The Mountain Hotel. This mountain hotel containing 250 rooms will be green enough to improve the quality of air within its radius. It will be covered in as much green as it can be.

The firm first created this vertical forest in Milan which is the base of the company. The next year it was in Switzerland for a competition and after that there was no stopping them. Their next project, the Mountain Hotel is going to be built in China whilst keeping the same green principles in mind as were used in other projects. For all one knows, this one is going to be better than the rest. Let’s hope the sustainability and greenery keeps spreading and there is always a ray of hope.

Through Switzerland, the company has already put itself on the global map virtually; it is only a matter of time that it has physical footprints too! There are already plans of building a green apartment block in Colombo, Sri Lanka. This apartment block apart from being covered in greenery will also have the following benefits –

  • Solar Panels
  • Recycling of Water

The building is going to be complete any time soon and it is definitely the world’s tallest vertical garden so far. Doesn’t the future of cities look bright already?

These green towers aren’t just going to save the environment but are also going to contribute to humanity in a big way. It might be the most humane business idea that every occurred in the Real Estate industry thanks to the architects. Though it is a fairly new trend, it is soon catching up. A lot of people are buying into these green homes and are glad to be a part of a greener world.

There’s always a ray of hope, isn’t it? Let us keep our lights shining! Towers have received a lot of criticism from the environmentalists but look at the irony, towers are now saviours! At the end of it all, there is always a way out?

Vertical Farming will help in saving the environment by cutting carbon footprint to quite an extent without compromising on the comfort of the residents. What more could one be asking for? It is no hidden fact that population is on a constant rise and skyscrapers are the need of the day.

They are the most feasible solution to modern day problems. Yet, can’t modern be combined with traditional? With eco-friendly sky scrapers, it is a battle won as both the problems, shortage of space and lapse of the environment are easily solved. Quite a few green sky scrapers have thankfully sprung across the world.

Vertical farming is a technique that imbibes the best of development and forest culture. It is surely one of the best practices to have been introduced in the eco-friendly sphere of architecture.
