At the Good Neighbor Park in Contra Costa, Calif., over 300 middle school and high school students joined in to watch and compete in the first annual Long Beach, CA Solar Grand Prix organized by the 5th District Solar and Sustainability Task Force. Headed by the Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske, the event showcased some spectacular solar cars made from wood, Styrofoam, plastic and aluminum that featured a solar panel resting on them. 86 model cars were completed and competed in multiple race rounds.

There’s a lot of excitement, and it’s a great time for them to learn about solar (energy), but also other things related to how cars work.

An all-girls team from Bethany Lutheran won the race with a car that was made from a two-liter Sprite bottle, soda caps, peanut butter lids and Velcro from an old shoe. Kids from DeMille Middle school bagged the second position in the competition.
