Have you ever thought of alternative ways to reuse human hair – apart from the usual hair extensions and wig forms in the beauty industry? Studio Swine has decided to go ahead and offer a unique alternative to recycling hair in the optical industry – by incorporating them in the frames of ‘Hair Glasses’! Alexander Groves and Azusa Murakami from Studio Swine are graduates from the Royal College of Art and have together come out with a collection of glasses made out of human hair.
The hair is actually contained inside the frames which are made of natural resin with hair bound inside them. These spectacles are entirely biodegradable and are made of a renewable raw material – human hair! These eyeglasses are very stylish and fashionable and utilize human hair in a very unique manner. Studio Swine’s collection of spectacles is on exhibition in London at Show RCA 2011. It is known that the British beauty industry imports human hair to the tune of 15 million pounds annually. Human hair is a renewable and abundant raw material considering the fact that the human population is increasing by millions. Hence, there is a lot of potential in the usage of human hair and the Hair Glasses are a good example to show how hair can be incorporated in the most unlikely products to create a biodegradable and environment-friendly pair of glasses.
Hence, ‘thinking out of the box’ is a must for new innovations for recycling and reusing products – even hair for that matter!
