‘Green with Envy’ is the name of Michelle Brand’s innovative wedding gown which is actually made out of recycled plastic bottles. The designer has put in a huge effort to prove that recycled material can actually look attractive and serve a purpose – and this wedding dress is her way of showcasing it to the world. The wedding gown isn’t quite the traditional kinds, but looks gorgeously resplendent with its 16-foot long train. It took months of hard work for Brand to put together 2,220 bases of old plastic bottle, 13,880 tags and 6,512 plastic bottle tops to arrive at this ‘green’ designer creation that weighs over 22 pounds. Not to mention, there were the other laborious tasks of getting the bottles to look extremely attractive by hours of washing, filing and polishing.
‘Green with Envy’ was showcased in April in the largest inner-city shopping center in the UK – around the time when the William-Kate wedding nuptials happened. The underlying message that the gown carried was to persuade shoppers to stop using plastic bags and swap them for reusable biodegradable totes. Brand is a strong believer in promoting and inculcating green practices and to appreciate art crafted out of recycled materials.Brand’s forte is mainly to create chandeliers out of used plastic bottles and the gown was new to her but she has succeeded in making a great wedding attire that would perhaps prompt people to think green and stop using plastic.
