The Dewdrop is a lamp designed and conceived by product designer Matthew Dawber for the Becker International Design Award. Dewdrop incorporates wood in an alternative way within the lighting display. The Becker Competition searches for excellent innovative, aesthetic and functional designs using shaped wood.
The exteriors of the lamp feature a leaf made from moulded wood. The leaf appears to flow into a basket shaped like a water droplet. Hence, the name Dewdrop. The basket is made from thin strips of wood bent by subjecting them to hot steam. When the thin strips cool down and dry out they stay moulded in the shape of a dewdrop. Inside the basket is an array of LEDs (light emitting diodes) that serves at the lighting display. LEDs consume less energy than conventional incandescent bulbs. The light of the LED array gets diffused through the thin strips of the basket. It creates a mottled pattern of light that resembles a forest canopy when it shines or reflects onto nearby surfaces.
