Two students of Cannon School have not just done their school proud and registered their names in the City of Concord’s success tale forever. Avery Olearczyk and Brianna Ratté, both of Huntersville have given its school the first and the city it’s second solar panel. The duo won them an internship at the Electric Power Research Institute, a non-profit research organization that studies the generation, delivery and use of electricity to benefit the public, where they learnt a lot about renewable energy. Spending their summer vacations at the organization’s Charlotte offices and laboratories, they grasped as much knowledge as was possible about the solar and wind power. They got a chance to observing cutting-edge green energy technologies, experiments and projects in progress, which they utilized to do something for their school, city and of course the environment.
Inspired by the work they saw in the Electric Power Research Institute, Olearczyk and Ratté decided to put their theoretical knowledge into practical use. Taking help from more than 50 scientists, engineers, businesspeople, national and local public officials and school administrators, the duo finally installed a 200-watt photovoltaic solar panel system at the their school on March 24. They wanted Cannon School set an example for the other schools to follow by demonstrate the potential of renewable energy sources and have successfully achieved their goal. This initiative is a part of the school’s broader research effort that will serve the purposes of educating Charlotte-area high school students about renewable energy.
