Architects Lacoste + Stevenson have won first prize in a design competition aimed at designing a new front door to the University of Technology, Sydney. The podium designed by the firm presents itself as a light, transparent and playful space that incorporates sustainability into overall scheme of things. The new addition is basically a vast steel podium which acts as a column, light well, ventilation shaft and occasionally as a stair.
Imparting a sculptural effect in the educational facility is the glass facade that allows penetration of ample sunlight thereby reducing power consumption and also the effects of noise pollution. Besides that the front elevation also shelters against elements such as intense sunlight which helps soothe the internal temperature thereby saving energy. Interestingly, the podium wears a green roof that covers 80 percent of the space and most importantly provides highly effective insulation for the building.
