Architecture students from the University of Applied Sciences in Detmold have set up an experimental pavilion from repurposed beer boxes, which will be recycled when the pavilion is disassembled. Designed by Henri Schweynoch last summer, the “BOXEL” is a result of digital design and fabrication tools. Constructed using more than 2,000 beer boxes, the summer pavilion is designed to use minimal surface and exhibit an aesthetically appealing design.
Since the empty beer boxes were not stacked onto but freely organized next to each other, the team performed several connection static load tests to understand the structural behavior of this unusual building material. Installed by following a simple system of slats and screws, the pavilion took just one week to complete. The BOXEL that creates a generous spatial scenery for presentations, concerts, events and gatherings on the campus also succeeded in making it into an impromptu competition.
