Cleveland Foundation is hoping to build an urban green house in one of the poorest neighborhoods in Central Cleveland. The triangular shaped 5 1/2-acre ultramodern hydroponic greenhouse will produce several million heads of lettuce a year and a million pounds of basil and other herbs using nutrient-rich liquids instead of soil.
The greenhouse will be powered by a wind turbine and hence remain off-grid. It will also employ at least 40-50 people from the neighborhood thereby giving them economic independence apart from fresh, affordable produce with minimal output of energy and resources.
