Telekom Austria, a telecommunications company is determined to make green recharge accessible to all electric vehicles: cars, scooters and bicycles. That is why it has decided to turn its public telephone boxes into battery recharging stations. In fact, it has unveiled the first such phone box in front of the company’s headquarters in Vienna on Tuesday. Here, vehicles could be recharged for no fees; however, the provision is for the initial trial period only. Once the concept gains wider recognition, the user will have to pay a single-digit euro sum for the same.
Where an electric car could recharge it in around 6.5 hours, electric scooters and bikes will take 80 minutes and 20 minutes respectively for juicing up their dying batteries. Soon, you would see all of Telekom’s 13,500 phone boxes around the country converted into recharging stations. By the end of this year, 29 more phone boxes will begin serving electric-vehicle owners.
