How callously do we direct waste paper to landfills! Giving paper its share of respect, Studio Jo Meesters has diverted waste paper from landfills and shaped it into something that is truly beautiful. The studio has come up with a collection of post consumer vessels and furniture made from paper waste and discarded vessel molds. Dubbed the “PULP 2.0,” the collection appears as if coming from ancient times. Looking at it, I get a feeling of watching some old movie of a different era.
Studio Jo Meesters started a project called TESTLAB, wherein experiments on the rejuvenation and the reuse of discarded materials were performed. After finding out the potential of paper pulp for furniture applications by upcycling cardboard panels and old newspapers, the PULP Collection came into existence. The collection that is a part of the TESTLAB project has vessels made by combining shredded paper, glue and water together to come up with a mixture whose layers are applied to the vessel’s exterior. After it dries, it is finally cut into two removing it from the mold. Then the pieces are glued back together, after which the last layers of the PULP mixture are applied. The inner side of the vessel is then treated with an epoxy resin that provides a strong and water resistant coating.
