New York City has finally taken the wraps off a $260 million renovation proposed for Governors Island. Dutch firm West 8 has collaborated with Rogers Marvel Architects, Diller, Scofidio + Renfro, SMWM and Urban Design+ to bring about the construction (scheduled to begin in 2012). When completed, the Island will see itself decked with boardwalks, winding paths, woods, sprawling meadows, marshland, flowering terraces and a hammock grove. As of now, the city has committed $41.5 million to the first phase of the development.

The finalized design rests itself on some old army barracks hinting that the site served as the oldest US military base for years. The Master Plan empathizes with the old buildings. So when they are demolished, they will create sufficient space for some big, man-made hills line with a paved terrace. The initial $41.5 million funding will be utilized to create a new ferry landing area at the northern end of the island and an encircling promenade. A cafe on the water’s edge will offer a stunning view of the Statue of Liberty.
