College of the Atlantic
This college is located at Bar Harbor, Maine. A small institution, it educates not more than a few hundred students in the field of human ecology. Having achieved the status of being the first college in America to become carbon neutral in the year 2007, the college went ahead and took initiatives such as green building, historic preservations, land conservation and toxic elimination. Moreover, the students are served food cooked from the local organic produce.
Warren Wilson College
This college is located at Swannanoa in North Carolina. A perfect example of a self-dependent institution, it does not have to look to any other establishment even for items like food or lumber. Everything is cultivated in their organic gardens and forests. Moreover, they use biodiesel to run their vehicles and have solar charged carts.
Evergreen State College
Spread across 1000 acres, this college is located at Olympia, Washington. It has a vast 800 acres of cultivation of woods, forest and saltwater beach. The organic farm is cultivated on a land of 13 acre. It uses electric vehicles and has Gold LEED certified green roof.
Oberlin College
This college has its students working efficiently towards eco-friendly systems, including a web based system that monitors used water and energy. The alumni list includes green guru David Orr. Located in Ohio, this place has the largest solar array in the state. Apart from this, they also have geothermal structures installed, that use only 20% of energy as compared to their regular counterparts. Some other eco-friendly factors include recycled materials, ventilation, green roof and extensive use of daylight lighting.
University of California
This university has 10 campuses, all of which use low or zero emission vehicles. The university hopes to achieve zero waste and be carbon neutral by the year 2020. It creates awareness and encourages students, teachers and other university employees to use bicycles.
