Amish Aviation’s human-powered flying buggy to compete at Red Bull Flugtag

Moving beyond the airborne outhouse, a flying fire engine and a replica of Santa’s sleigh that dominated at the Red Bull power drink’s Flugtag event last year, the event will sure make some heads turn at the Delaware River, Philadelphia, this year too. This Saturday, some aeronauts form Amish Aviation, a flight team comprised mostly of employees of The Brickyard Restaurant and Sports Bar in Lancaster, will shove their flying buggy down a slanting 30-foot-long ramp while hoping it could soar over the river.

Some cardboard horses will pull the fully human-powered, cardboard-made flying machine. Currently in production in a barn near Strasburg, the aircraft will aim to win the team members their chance to fly with Red Bull race pilot Kirby Chambliss at his Phoenix, Ariz., ranch. For now, just cool your heels and hope the flying machine does well at the Camden waterfront.
