Art out of junk

Recycled Sculptures by Bill Harzfeld 1
Bill Herzfeld is an artist of his own hue. His special art is a result of his passion to create beautiful pieces from cast-off metal, old screwdrivers, wires, nuts and bolts, discarded typewriters and all things capable of filling landmines! Though Bill Herzfeld always held fondness for a kind of art wherein he could recreate objects through combining any and every kind of metal piece, his dream was realized only when he was left jobless with his employers downing shutters at his workplace. His wife then encouraged him to follow his dreams and get into something that he enjoyed doing. This is when his company – Eclectic Wonders – took shape, it showcases Herzfeld’s talent and also takes his remarkable works of art to the business gallaries.

His ability to look for an art piece in a layman’s trash, is what separates him from us. Something that we prefer to call useless and worth being thrown away, Herzfeld usually finds it very useful and probably an important addition to make his next artwork more beautiful. His backyard is enough proof of his passion to recycle and reuse, here you can find a variety of metallic creations including a spider, a flower, a wind chime, a lightning bug and a lot more beautiful pieces gracing the place. His welding workshop is full of old items like broken pianos and rusted metals that are almost unrecognizable and worthless for us – but priceless for Herzfeld. He finds and collects his valuable ‘raw materials’ from flea markets across Connecticut (having a keen eye for objects) and then assembles them into small or big sculptures.

Herzfeld’s has won a lot of acclaim and his exhibits have found a definite place in all the local art studios. Besides, he has been part of a popular show “That’s Clever” on HGTV, that showed him create a giant bug with his special `art’ objects. Despite recession and reduction in peoples’ spending capacity, Herzfeld continues to create these pieces with a rigorous zeal, notwithstanding losses in his own business due to the financial meltdown. It is heartening to see individuals like him endeavoring to make the world green in their own special way!
