Basket-shaped sculpture fills itself with plant fibers to look green

What you see above is a strange fusion of traditional Ghanaian basketry and highly modern, creative digital fabrication. It’s a collaborative sculpture, which was brought to existence by American duo of John Adams and Ricki Dwyer. Dubbed as Fabricated Harvest, the amazing installation is an attempt to make all observe how plant fibers could grow (or, appear as growing) over a mechanically exhaustive base, and how it lends a unique grace to the entire installation.

As we explore the growing lack of nature in our daily lives, we need to resort to such materials and objects that could evoke the natural environment artificially. The artists used Rhino 3D and Grasshopper software to divide an ellipsoid surface into a hexagonal pattern. In the above image, you could see 748 wooden hexagons cut using an 18×32 laser cutter. However, the coolest part of it is a large basket filled with plant fibers that grows over the geometrical surface.
