Blowing NoWhere Wind Turbine: A greener alternative to the diesel-powered electricity generators

The Burning Man festival has given us a lot of radical art including this Zeppelin-inspired Art Car and this rather bemusing bicycle sculpture thing. The European version of the American art festival called NoWhere, however, attracts less hippy-ish crowds. The annual event is held near Zaragoza in north-eastern Spain every July and though the European arts-based event leaves no trace of itself, doesn’t promote commerce and promotes radical self-reliance and radical self-expression just like the Burning Man festival does. It does it in a very distinctly European way. The Blowing Nowhere Wind Turbine by Aran Dasan is one such example of the festival’s cultural distance from the American event and it proves the difference between the American sensibilities driven by consumerism and waste and that of the Europeans that look more towards promoting sustainability.

Blowing Nowhere

Inspired by harsh beauty and extreme conditions of the Spanish landscape, the Blowing NoWhere is a power-generating wind turbine created especially to provide visitors at the art festival with clean electricity. Since the Nowhere festival is organized literally in the middle of nowhere, it cannot rely on traditional sources of power. The Blowing NoWhere Wind Turbine provides the festival attendees with a greener alternative to the diesel-powered electricity generators that have been used by the festival so far.

Fashioned using upcycled, reclaimed and salvaged materials, the Blowing NoWhere Wind Turbine uses a tent canvas for its tail, a bike frame for its headstock and a modified ceiling fan for its generator. PVC drainpipe serve as blades on the turbine and it uses stainless steel milking parlor tubes for its mast. Permanent magnets have been used in place of rotor coils of the old ceiling fan and the turbine charges a 12V leisure battery at the ground level.

And that’s not all. Since the Blowing NoWhere Wind Turbine was created for the art festival that encourages participation, its creator also fitted its blades with LEDs that are controlled via an on-board microprocessor so that Blowing NoWhere Wind Turbine also turns into a hypnotic dynamic piece of art by night!
