Cathedral of Junk may bow to reasonably unreasonable city diktat

Vince Hannemann elevates old hubcaps, bicycles, blenders, crutches, urinals, computer guts, lawn mower wheels, kitchen utensils, shopping carts, typewriters, sewing machines and other objects to something that he can feel proud of – The Cathedral of Junk. Standing proud in a South Austin backyard in Texas, the 33-foot-high building – structurally feeble though – is a messy compilation of discarded stuff held together with wires.

However, Austin’s Public Assembly Code Enforcement unit does not find the three-story, 60-ton structure complying with the safety standards of the city. Unsafe wiring and ladder should go out within just seven days. Hannemann finds the request perfectly reasonable, yet what he deems as somewhat unreasonable is the “limited time to do it.”

I’ve had a whole bunch of volunteers helping me get it out of the setback. As soon as we’re finished doing that, we’ll get the survey company and an architect to draw the plans for the permit.

Says Hannemann.
