Colombia’s first underwater museum to help sustain marine life

colombias first underwater museum

As no less than 300 amateur and professional divers will lunge into the Marina on the bay of Santa Marta during an underwater expedition from August 13 through 15, they will lay the foundation of the Colombia’s first underwater museum. Proposed for Tayrona National Park, the museum will be home to different species of flora and fauna that will sustain their lives on an artificial reef created from objects such as such as broken sculptures, structures, boats and aircrafts.

All the debris recovered during the expedition stated above will become works of art. The artworks will inform commoners about the rising level of trash. After the sculptures have generated some funds for the project, they will be thrown back into the artificial reef. The divers also hope to aid in the capture and control of Lionfish. The University Jorge Tadeo Lozano will do their research on captured specimens of the invasive species.
