There is no need to throw out all those plastic bags you get from grocery stores and super markets. In addition to contributing to landfill and pollution, you would be missing a fantastic opportunity to reuse these bags to make some impressive kitchen décor items. Take for example the beautiful rug that has been made of nothing but plastic bags and reused drink containers.
So how do you go about transforming otherwise useless plastic bags into these beautiful decorative pieces? Here’s some information that would help you out.
Your first step would be to collect as many plastic bags as you can. The model in this example was made of nearly 200 plastic bags. You can choose different colors depending on which colors you want in your rug. While plain white would look regal, a splash of color would make your rug look brighter and more beautiful.
You would need to cut away the handles and the bottom strips from these plastic bags, and retain only the middle portion from which you would get the individual strips. The handles and bottom strips can be thrown away (of course we said you could recycle the entire bag, but if you are able to remove strips from these areas then well and good, you can reuse them as well).
Cut out individual strips of paper from the plastic bag and string them together to get a taut strip that can withstand some amount of pressure. Keep the string taut when you tie these strips together.
Now using a crochet, carefully tie the strips together, taking two strips at a time. Crochet two of these strips, stop to tie two more on, and crochet the strips again. This will enable you to keep the individual strips taut as you go through the design. Choose the colored strips in accordance with the design or pattern that you have chosen for the rug.
Make sure you prevent ruffles and rolls from forming on the surface, and move through the design patiently. If you know how to crochet, it would take you less than a day to finish the rug (beginners can take anywhere between 2-3 days to finish the design).
