Damascus College team to ride from Darwin to Melbourne on a solar-powered trike

A team of 19 students from Ballarat’s Damascus College has created a solar-powered trike or three-wheeled bike that capably does 115km/h. The fully sheltered and enveloped trike allows its driver to drive it without any resistance from wind. Developed as the part of an 11-year program called the Energy Breakthrough Team, the trike will challenge the most sophisticated buses having solar-powered satellite tracking, live Google map plotting and 16 different sensors for wireless radio feedback, in an expedition called RodeRAGE.

The contenders will travel no less than 3775km from Darwin to Melbourne in just 11 days. Doable for the hi-tech buses mentioned above, but for a trike, it is too demanding. The students will work in shifts of about one hour each as they’ll cruise at a brisk pace of 90km/h. The solar-powered bike is expected to reach Melbourne December 9.

Along the route, they will visit towns to talk about the environment and raise money for global sustainable energy and food programs.

Says Mark McLean, the teacher in charge of the expedition, called Road Rage, while revealing the aim of the expedition.
