There are us who need excuses to do just anything for someone’s sake, and then there are a few, in the compassionate thick of things, who do most for a humanitarian cause just out of their motivation. The lads behind EcoScraps – an Arizona-based startup are a few who’ve taken it upon themselves to convert food waste into ingredient for their organic compost and potting soil, this making them apt to be reckoned as selfless ecotarians (yes, we’ve made that up).

EcoScraps has linked up with grocers and wholesalers to provide them with the massive piles of fruits and vegetables that perish in the stores without selling out. The company then uses this waste as an ingredient for their organic compost and potting soil, which is then sold off to independent nurseries in the State. A very large quantity of fruits and vegetables perish in the grocery stores, wholesale shops and homes (30 million tons of food is wasted annually by Americans alone), so an idea to haul this waste to create soil is an idea well done, and everyone at EcoScraps deserves accolades for their journey on this track thus far.

Brandon Sargent, EcoScrap’s co-founder and vice president explained,
It hasn’t been too difficult to get grocers to sign on, because trash companies charge stores by the weight of what’s hauled away. In almost every situation, we save them money by picking up their waste, if they don’t understand the eco-friendly aspect; at least they understand the bottom line.
By picking up waste from grocers and wholesalers personally, EcoScrap doesn’t only save them money and time, for the environment’s cause it also saves that food waste from reaching the landfills, which not only goes useless but also ends contributing to the perishing environment. Thus, the work this Tempe, Arizona company that begin working in February is worth commending. In the test phase the company has managed to sell compost in 12 Valley nurseries, and enjoyed strong sales without having to advertise.
How do they work?
Because of the poor soil story of Arizona and a very conscious and eco-friendly populace, EcoScrap has managed to get a response that’s made everyone involved in EcoScrap and the company itself a hit in the valley. For the functioning, EcoScrap collects about five to six tons of food waste a day, which they haul in from all stores etc and then this collected food trash is pulverized and mixed with wood chips to form the compost soil.
The Future
Having managed to gain a lot in the very limited period of time it’s been in business, EcoScraps now wishes to expand beyond the bounds of Arizona. The company wishes to start selling in Oregon and Colorado – where they could begin as early as this summer, where after they wish to have franchises in New Mexico, Texas and southern California.
