Bangalore-based Kotak Urja Pvt Ltd will be launching a solar-powered lamp named the Egg Lamp in half a year from now. Dedicated to the rural masses of India who don’t have easy access to power sources, the solar lamp with a six-hour charging time will bring in a sure ray of hope to millions. The wall-mountable lamp allows you to charge your mobile phones through a charging socket and also features FM radio with a built-in antenna and speakers.

K Srinivas Kumar, Kotak Urja’s CEO, says…

It’s portable and lightweight and has NiMH batteries for multiple recharge and weighs 2.2 kgs only. For urban homes, it is positioned as emergency lamp. Brightness is as good as that of a 25 watt bulb.

Once it is fully charged, it keeps working for six to 16 hours. Where the dimmer mode facilitates reading, habitation mode offers bright light for family use. Just to let the user know its usage status, the LED or CFL-enabled lamp comes with an indicator for the same. The company is pressing on wider publicity for their product and is seeking partners for introducing the green gadget worldwide. Expecting to sell it around Rs 1,500 ($33) a pop, the company also wishes to make 100,000 sales in two-and-half years.
