Lisbon-based Blaanc collaborated with Architect João Caeiro to bring about the first-place-winning design in the OS House Design Competition. Their proposal (concept home), dubbed as Emerging Ghana, is a $12,500 USD modular single-family home, which utilizes locally furnished materials, local labor, and certain sustainable design strategies. The concept home, which is a sustainable off the grid housing unit, aims to supply West Africa’s emerging middle class with an affordable housing solution.

The livable space houses an energy efficient structure that cost around 2/3rds the current cost of middle income housing in the country. Solar passive design, natural ventilation, earth walls, dahoma wood, and bamboo construction, rainwater harvesting, solar hot water tank and a small septic tank: the prototype structure flaunts them all. The OS House project team is working with local partners to bring the first prototype structure into existence by the end of this year. If it works well, you will see more than 100, 000 OS-Houses supporting Ghanaian populace by 2020.
