The resource-rich African continent has fulfilled European needs since ages. The nature of vital import from this region has also varied depending on the neighbor’s requirement. Once again the African mainland is bracing up to meet power hungry Europe’s energy necessities. Backing upon plentiful sunlight in the Sahara desert, the European Union has decided to import so solar generated electricity from North Africa in the next five years. The initial supply would come from small pilot projects followed by a much larger amount running into thousands of megawatts as projects including the 400 billion Euro Desertec solar scheme takes shape. The EU plans to lay out electricity cables underneath the Mediterranean Sea to import power from North Africa to Europe. It is hoped that the project would help Europe meet 20 percent of its energy needs from renewable sources by 2020.
