Do you believe that Europe is still as green as it was a century before? Well, as you look at the living façade, which was just recently (on May 22, World Biodiversity Day) added to the outside wall of the headquarter of the European Environment Agency in Copenhagen, you will start believing it (if you don’t). Shaped like the European continent, the green wall features 5,000 plants from 20 different plant species, including purple verbena, dark green sedum and delicate sutera. Somehow, it is a breathing documentary on how, despite urbanization, global warming and all, biodiversity is still thriving.
First of its kind in Denmark, the vertical green façade, dubbed as ‘Europe in bloom: a living façade’, is supposed to provide insulation, absorb urban noise and dust, and offer shelter to birds and insects as well. An automated system waters the plants that grow inside felt pockets, while the surplus drains to the bottom of the wall of a custom-made support structure. ‘Europe in bloom’ will be on display until mid-October.
