Francisco Flores’ Green Sofa-Cama (sofa-cum-bed)

Eco-friendly Sofa/Bed by Francisco Flores
Francisco Flores is a designer from Mexico who spent four months in conceptualizing a couch that would be built of reused, recycled and biodegradable materials. However, he was keen to turn the couch into a cozy bed: a Sofa-Cama (a sofa-bed). After more than four months, Francisco managed to manufacture a sofa that was assembled without any hinges, screws and nails using minimal adhesive.

The entire ensemble of the Sofa-Cama was a mere 14 pieces – which upon assembling created an eco friendly and comfortable sofa cum bed. The bed can be dismantled very easily and can be transported without any hassle of carrying a massive piece of furniture! Furthermore, the assemble of the pieces is also very simple as only 4 pieces require adhesive to produce the final piece.

Simplicity, sheer innovation and the desire to make something that can make the most of scrap materials and to thoughtfully merge all of that into a creative marvel makes this Sofa-Cama truly “green” in all respects. The Sofa-Cama is crafted out of recovered polypropylene and foam strips, wood, aluminum and 100% cotton twill – all used materials.

The frame of this furniture is crafted out of wood and the the strips of foam and polypropylene and interwoven to form the “mattress like hammock” sitting area. The sofa can easily be transformed into a bed by giving the back rest portion of the sitting area a push forward and vice-versa. The Sofa-Cama is indeed a very compelling and a brilliantly executed design and is a strong effort to reuse and recycle.
