The very first day of racing at the 2010 Shell Eco-Marathon has been an eventful one. With the Team Polyjule Polytech Nantes from France achieving 11,516 miles on a single gallon of fuel, the previous record holder ETH Zurich of Switzerland stands thwarted by a huge 2494 mpg fuel-efficiency difference. The French team set the new record with a hydrogen prototype vehicle that was built in Lausitz, Germany. The makers made sure that their streamliner remains as ultralight and tight fitting as is possible.
The amount of hydrogen used during the feat was deduced by converting it into its gasoline equivalent. Furthermore, the car actually ran over a few miles on a very less fuel. So, the results were later converted to mpg to calculate the fuel efficiency.
