Sometimes, when you lack something, you start thinking out of the box. It actually happened to the owner of the fabulously green Oregonian home, who decided to go off-grid because his home was not connected to public utilities. The $640,000 home, owned by Leanne Smith, is crafted in timber. Spread across an area of 29,000 square foot, the house has its roof laden with 27 solar panels that generate enough power for it.

The timber frame of the house came from David Frames Co. Smith’s home includes air space for more insulation. Featuring an in-floor solar heating, a cistern, low-flow plumbing fixtures, Energy Star appliances, efficient LED/CFL lighting and high-performance Eagle windows by Anderson, the home has won platinum certification from the Earth Advantage.
