Art knows no bounds. This has been proved by the alliance between London based designer Christopher Lee and Mumbai based designer Kapil Gupta. Both of them have formed a creative team known as the Serie Architects. Their creation consists of a multi-purpose performance space at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., USA. The conversion piece was initially conceived as an installation piece and developed into a three dimensional carpet. The piece once developed was suspended over the main space creating a mind boggling environment at the space center. To be honest, the carpet is completely one of a kind and it exudes delicate warmth of its own. Some of the ideas people come up with are just worth applauding. The best part is that the carpet has been crafted out of eco-friendly threads and of course, its hand crafted which adds to the delicate beauty of the product. The use of plywood panels also contribute to its green credentials.
Carefully crafted out of a system of colorful threads, the undulating and varying designs of the ceiling carpet enclose within their depths various technical equipments. The project has been designed and is now being showcased in the Maximum India festival from March 1- March 20 2011. Having been influenced from the traditional Indian designs also known as ‘dhurries’ (a type of flat-woven rug in India), creating a visually pleasing design was not a tough task for the duo. The carpet lends a new look and feel to the gallery, marking a sign of gaiety and eye pleasure.
The creation of any beautiful thing takes time and a lot of patience. Similarly, in the creation of this masterpiece, around 20 individuals were involved, 5 staff members from Serie architects and 15 students. Available in four different shades of white and blue, the excellent fusion of color lends a very subtle ambiance to the creation. Created over a period of 2 months, the installation has been made from 120 plywood panels which serve as the underlying structural system, featuring a pixilated grid of 150 mm diameter perforations that hold the more than million threads. If you notice carefully, the assembly of threads has been done in such an articulate way so as to ensure the formation of an ultimate masterpiece. I’d say the duo has done a wonderful piece of work and the same is visible in the final product.
