Ever since its founding in 1999, Architecture for Humanity has been utilizing the power of professional design to propose and raise a more sustainable future for all. Wishing to make greener inroads into Southern California beach culture, it lately invoked architects to suggest designs for a future walkway in Oceanside, California, United States. Architect Hunter Ruthrauff collaborated with environmental consultant Garrett Van Leeuwen to help design the Info Nodes – Safe Trestles Path.
Several info nodes (kiosks) at strategic points contain educational elements to inform users about site’s ecosystem and its history. Where the inner nodes feature solar energy collectors, the entrance node collects wastewater for re-use onsite. Grey water is also processed for re-use. Another node over the wetlands will utilize a coiled bioreactor to harvest algae for bio-fuel. The same bioreactor filters water for the wetlands ecosystem.
The walkway will run all along the existing dirt footpath at San Onofre state park. The proposed elevated walkway neatly submerges into the landscape.
