A student team from Laval University in Quebec, Canada has done it again for a second consecutive year in winning the Grand Prize in the “Prototype” category at the Shell Eco Marathon. Even though the team could not better their last year’s award-winning performance, they fell short by 270 miles per gallon, but 2487.5 miles per gallon is still something beyond achievable. The Laval team went past 42 teams from 9 high schools and 28 universities.

Vying against 28 vehicles powered by combustion engines, five by fuel cell/hydrogen technology, two by solar power and two by diesel fuel, in the Prototype Category, the Laval University team’s achievement says a lot about their endeavor. The students worked a lot to maximize fuel efficiency as they introduced some innovative design elements, like drag reduction, and ran their vehicle on unconventional fuel.
